After Jupiter’s Legacy and Super Crooks release on Netflix, American Jesus looked like the next main Millarworld adaptation to come to Netflix. First announced among the initial list of shows and 2018 films, filmmaking has now begun in April 2022.
First released in 2004 with the selected name, the comic book series was one of the first titles of Millarworld. It was then released again because American Jesus and 3 problems were released in total. The follow-up comic series was released between 2019 and 2020 called American Jesus: The New Messiah with 3 issues released in total.
This comic comes from Mark Millar who wrote the title with Peter Gross serving as an artist.
American Jesus is among the Netflix comic libraries obtained in 2017 with the acquisition of Millarworld.
A year after the acquisition, the first list of shows and Millarworld films was announced with American Jesus among the names.
This is what was announced about Jesus America at the time:
“Serial Multilingual (Spanish / English) American Jesus followed a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly found him back as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, walking, and, maybe, even raising the dead! How will he face fate to lead the world in thousands of years of conflict in making? “
Who is behind American Jesus for Netflix?
Gout Everardo and Leopoldo Gout were originally announced at first as a co-showrunners. The first will also function as a series director too.
Just like how Netflix initially boiled Steven S. Deknight for Jupiter’s Legacy (which mainly left the project in a dramatic way) who led the successful Daredevil series, Netflix bought in one of Luke Cage’s director in the form of Gout Everardo. He directed the season 2 episode 12 of the Marvel series.
Elsewhere, Gout Everardo was known for Forever Purge which was released in 2021. He directed the Joe Picket episode for Paramount + and worked on performances such as Snowpiercer, The Terror, National Geographic’s Mars, and Banshee.
Leopoldo Gout is known for serving as an executive producer in Netflix Jeffrey Epstein’s document: Rich which is dirty and serves as an executive producer at an event like Zoo and Instinct.
Also working on this series is Stacy Perskie and serving as a casting director is Luis Rosales.
About what America is Jesus?
The official comic description gives us a strong indication of what we can expect and it seems that it will follow the first problem carefully:
“After surviving a strange accident, a twelve-year-old boy found that he was Jesus Christ returned. He could turn water into wine, walking with paralysis … he could even arouse the dead. How will he handle his destiny and lead the world through a conflict that has been thousands of years in making? “
Netflix page settings for American Jesus (that you must navigate directly to the time of writing and not available through search) states:
“A 12-year-old boy learned that he returned to Jesus Christ in his last attempt to save mankind and had to step into his destiny. Based on Mark Millar comics. “
We have also seen character descriptions for the two main characters with it is Jodie and his mother, Sarah.
Jodie was described as “a teenager who seemed normal until a strange accident made him think otherwise. He is not a shy pathologically, but introverts. He was also a great storyteller, the nature he used to entertain his friends. “
Sarah is described as “a beautiful and brave woman. He is Jodie’s mother and she often protects it, even though she doesn’t know from what she protects it. “
When will production begins to Jesus America?
As we stated above, tentative production was determined to start on March 1, 2022. Although we do not have the right shooting location, we know that the majority of events will be filmed in Mexico, outside of the special Mexico City.
The Millarworld account confirmed that the photo shoot in the series officially began on April 25, 2022. When asked whether Mark Millar would visit the set, the account (no longer carried out by Millar) responded:
“I think Mark appears at several points, but the set is 14 hours from Mexico City and the temperature is 40 degrees. As ginger, I’m not sure he is designed to survive!”
Production in the show was first thought of in the spring 2020 but naturally, delay was undoubtedly caused by global pandemic.
In May 2021, Mark Millar spoke with the deadline to give them an update about the series that said:
“Development for Jesus America came beautifully in the hands of talented and capable of Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout. I am fascinated by creative choices that Netflix allows us, and mainly because this series will display Spanish and English dialogue.”
The release date, too early to say. We speculate that it will be in the next one or two years before we see it on Netflix.
Although it has been a difficult start for Millarworld for Netflix at least in the film and TV front, has been secretly releasing many comics since 2018 including Sharkey the Bounty Hunter, Space Bandits, and most recently, King Spies.
Among the next list of Netflix projects that are expected to arrive including Jesus America, Super Crooks live-action projects and the magic sequence returned to development after being postponed.
