North Korea fired hypersonic ballistic missiles this week that managed to reach the target, the KCNA State News Agency reported on Thursday, the second test as the country pursued a new military ability in the midst of jammed denucleanlariary talks.
The launch on Wednesday was the first by North Korea since October and was detected by several military in the region, begging criticism from the government in the United States, South Korea and Japan.
North Korea first tested hypersonic missiles in September, joined a race led by major military forces to spread a sophisticated weapons system.
Unlike ballistic missiles that fly into space before returning to steep trajectes, hypersonic weapons fly towards the target at a lower altitude and can reach more than five times the speed of sound – or around 6,200 km per hour (3,850 mph).
“Consecutive success in the test launch in the hypersonic missile sector has strategic significance because they accelerate the task of modernizing the strategic armed forces of the country,” KCNA report said.
In Wednesday’s test, “Hypersonic Gliding Warhead” was released from the rocket booster and maneuvered 120 km (75 miles) laterally before “exactly about” 700 km target (430 miles), KCNA reported.
The test also confirms components such as flight control and its ability to operate in winter, added KCNA.
Missiles show their ability to combine “Multi-step flights slid jump and strong lateral maneuvers,” KCNA said.
